Welcome to Computer Eye Strain!
With so many computers in the home and at work that are being used for long periods of time, there is a huge increase in eye symptoms associated with computer eye strain. Strained eyes from frequent and prolonged use at a computer can cause a multitude of symptoms. These symptoms include stress headaches, eye pain, fatigue, neck and shoulder pain and a decrease in productivity at work.
There are many different things you can do to help prevent computer eye strain. First, make sure that your computer screen is updated. The old tube-faced monitors can cause flickering that put an increased strain on the eye. If you must work with this type of screen, there are attachments that are flat and can cover the old screen. This will help reduce the flickering and glare. Adjusting any lighting around your computer is also key. Desk lamps should never shine directly onto the screen of your computer. Any light shining directly on your computer will also create a glare that can strain the eyes. If you wear eyeglasses, be sure to have them made or updated with an anti-reflective coating. This will also reduce reflection from the glasses to your computer. Be sure to adjust the brightness setting on your computer so that it’s not too dark or too bright.

In addition to adjusting your computer and your eyeglasses, there are also simple things you can do daily to avoid computer eye strain. Blinking more often to produce more moisture around your eyes will help. Looking away from your screen every 20 minutes and focusing on an object that is further away (about 20 feet) for at least 20 seconds, will also prevent computer eye strain. This is known as the 20-20-20 rule and helps relax the eyes while letting them refocus. Another good exercise that can be done to help prevent eye strain is to find an object to focus on away from the computer for 15 seconds, then look at an object that is close-up for 15 seconds
Many people that work for long periods of time on the computer suffer from whole body fatigue, as well as pain in their neck and shoulders. This can also be directly related to having your eyes straining on the computer for long periods of time. It is recommended that you get up and walk around each hour, even if you simply pace around in your work area for a few minutes and stretch. Most importantly, be sure to visit an eye doctor at least once a year to have your eyes checked or your eyeglass prescription adjusted as needed.
